Abstract

Polyoxymethylene copolymer (POM-C) is a processable thermoplastic of white natural colour. The POM-C exhibits high rigidity, high toughness, high tensile strength and easy to process and widely used in the automotive and electrical industry. The flexibility in the coloration is an important topic to satisfy customer demand in colour design. In order to satisfy demands in other colour, the POM-C has to be coloured. Thus, the aim of study investigates the effect of colorant pigment on the mechanical properties of polyoxymethylene copolymer (POM-C) in long gear. POM-C with color pigment with 1.1% pigment concentration was prepared by and pigment dispersing process. Both POM-C and POM-C with color pigment tested specimens were fabricated by injection molding process. The dispersion of pigment in POM-C was studied by light microscope. The existence of pigment agglomerate in POM-C color pigment showed decrease in tensile strength, flexural strength and Izod impact strength compared to pure POM-C. The inorganic pigment agglomerates can have a deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of the POM-C since stress concentration will exist that lead to inferior mechanical properties. XRF shows that the color pigment is complex inorganic color pigments (CICPs) since it contains two or more different metals inside. SEM-EDX analysis contributes the evidence which elements obtained in the POM-C with color pigment but not in pure POM-C.
