Abstract

From the past few years, polymer nanocomposites have attracted countless attention because of their amazing enhancements in materials properties when compared with the virgin polymer. This study is an effort to discover the influence of soaking temperature and also the swelling media toward physical properties of NR/EPDM blends and NR/EPDM filled with GNPs. This study only has two stages, the first stage is a physical testing of the NR/EPDM blends and NR/EPDM nanocomposites in different swelling media at a different temperature and durations. The swelling dimension was carried out according to ASTM D471 (25mm x 50mm x 2mm) and was weighed using an electric balance. Then, followed by immersion in the chosen swelling media (brake oil, gear oil, and engine oil) for 2 hours and 5 hours. The experiment is conducted at room temperature, 60˚C, and 80˚C. The experiment repeated for 24 times using three different swelling media, durations and temperature. The experimental data in term of the swelling percentage and change in dimension are presented in the graph for further analysis and discussion. Another stage is the analysis of unswollen and swollen NR/EPDM nanocomposites, the analysis of the morphological, structural, compositional and also thermal are investigated for further understanding. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) is used for compositional analysis, meanwhile X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and swelling measurement are used for the structural analysis. The thermal analysis by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Lastly, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is used for the morphological analysis. The result and discuss are about the comparison between the unswollen and swollen sample. Engine oil shows the most potential compared to others solvent and with the increase of the temperature and duration will increase the swelling percentage on the rubber blends and nanocomposites.
