Abstract

Alternator supplies current to all the electrical components in the car while charging the battery, but in most of the time, the alternator is not being used optimally. The alternator is run by mean of rotation by the belt and pulley. Since the rotation is continuous, it is believed that there is wasted potential by the alternator. This study investigates the amount of unused electricity by the alternator and to use it to power a hydrogen separator cell, which can bring benefits to the engine and the environment. Energy audit on the alternator output was done to measure the electricity, and the hydrogen separator cell was tested to determine the possibility to be installed to the car. It was found that the faster the speed of alternator, the more current it can produce, depending on the demand by the system, but the higher the temperature will rise. The hydrogen separator cell only required small amount of current for it to operate, thus the alternator can fully support it without harming the battery. Adding load (hydrogen separator cell) to the alternator will not reduce the temperature, but it can bring benefit to the car and environment.
