Abstract

The aims of this study are to investigate the effect of thermal processing parameters used in reclamation process onto the mechanical properties and physical properties of reclaimed carbon fibre and their behaviour in rCF-PLA composites system.In this project the carbon fibres were reclaimed through pyrolysis and combustion process.In pyrolysis,three different temperatures which were used, 450oC,500oC and 550oC while 500oC for combustion.rCF-PLA composites were fabricated with 10 wt. % of rCF.The strength of rCF were determined by single fibre tensile testing and normal tensile testing using ASTM D3039 for single fibre and composite respectively.For pyrolysis process,the strength of rCF of 450oC,500oC and 550oC are 7.71GPa,6.39GPa and 6.20GPa respectively and 3.78GPa for 500oC combustion rCF.The interfacial bonding between rCF and PLA matrix is maximum using 500oC which is 41.34MPa. Morphological analysis revealed that the amount of epoxy residue left on the surface of rCF is minimum at 550oC indicating a effective removal of matrix during the processing.However the diameter of carbon fibre was smallest compare to other temperatures suggesting thermal degradation of carbon fibre has occur at maximum temperature.This is supported with by the mechanical properties of composite which is optimised at 500oC in comparison to 550oC given by 35.39MPa.The surface fracture of composite revealed that the composite failed due to fibre pull out with brittle nature.
