Abstract

Utility Pole which is conventionally only used for carrying overhead cables is transforming to become multifunction as it is combining with other public facilities such as street light. Now, the utility pole is not only important in supporting the power transmission but also plays a significant role in providing the main source of light to the public at night. However, the utility pole that needs to withstand any kind of weather in outdoor environment requires ongoing maintenance to provide service and avoid the collapsing pole from harming the public. In the existing system, the faulty street light is only noticed when the report is received from the public or discovered by the patrol unit. Such delay in the maintenance process has put the public at risk, causing a critical safety and issue among the public. In order to overcome the problem mentioned, this paper proposed an automated real time utility pole fault detection system that can detect both faulty lamp and pole. When the defect is detected, a notification with failure information such as the type of defect, pole identity and location of the faulty pole will be sent to the contractor immediately. By that, it is expected that, the efficiency of the maintenance progress can be maximized and the risk of collapsing poles, night crashes and criminal cases can be minimized.
