Abstract

Nowadays. to fabricate a sandwich composite which consist facing and core structure, there are various raw materials to be used, but, some of this material is invested the higher cost. Because of this problem, there have an alternative material to use as a core structure which can reduce the cost, the aimed for this research is designed and fabricated the sandwich structures by using plywood as the core materials to study the effect of thickness on mechanical properties. In other hand, this research is identified the best thickness of plywood honeycomb core in a variety applications. Furthermore, after determine the best thickness, this research also investigated the failure mode after do a testing such as flexural test, tensile test, and water absorption test based on ASTM standard. This research is fixed in number of plies and thickness which are 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm and 12 mm for reviewing the mechanical and physical properties to get better performance by reducing the cost although this research is used plywood as an alternative core material, but, the better performance in mechanical and physical properties will achieved as used the plywood bas high potential to be the core materials in sandwich structure in many applications. According to mechanical testing that has been conducted, 6mm is the best thickness for plywood honeycomb core, followed by 3 mm, 9 mm and 12 mm. This is due to difference bonding between glass fiber with plywood core.
