Abstract

Until now, KUTKM tend to purchase lab equipment from local and international manufacturers while ironically we have the capabilities and expertise to produce the same standard of equipment if not better. Due to this fact, research project has been done in designing and implementing a search and retrieval mobile robot for application oriented and practical based educational purposes. The first objective of this project is to construct a mobile robot consisting of microcontroller, sensors and actuators such as motors and gripper. Steps like literature review, circuit simulation and hardware construction have been done to complete the first objective. The hardware can be divided into two parts which are the training board and the mobile robot. The training board contains a few actuators and sensors that usually used for robot construction such as DC motors, stepper motors, servo motors, LEDs, switches, LCD and relay. It is also equipped with programmer where user can easily download the program into the microcontroller memory and test the flow of the program by using sensors and actuators available before the microcontroller being used practically on the mobile robot. On the other hand, the second hardware which is the mobile robot is used to run the program where it has been verified earlier on the training board. On the next stage, sensors are attached to the mobile robot and researchers are concentrated on the programming in order to fulfill the second and third research objectives which are to implement navigation and motion, search and retrieval algorithms. The last objective of this research project is to prepare the learning modules to accompany the hardware. A group of students have been chosen to attend a five days workshop where they were given all the modules together with the hardware. This workshop has been used as a method to test the believability of the hardware and the effectiveness of all the learning modules. At the end of the workshop, students are required to give comments and their comments are taken into consideration to improve the final project.
