Abstract
Lasers are widely used in industry as cutting tools due to ultra-flexibility of the cutting conditions, obtaining high quality end product, quick set up, non-mechanical contact between the workpiece and the tool, and small size of the heat affected zone. Due to the advance of laser cutting in machining sheet metal, it still has limitation in cutting circular geometries or turning process. This research report presents about how to develop a work holding mechanism for the use of non-contact machining. A mechanism of spinning device has been developed to provide the rotational motion of cylindrical work pieces for turning operation. The effects of cutting parameters such as cutting speed, spinning speed and depth of cut on the machining responses such as roundness and taper has been investigated to validate the developed tool accuracy.
