Abstract

To be profitable, a business operation needs to establish and nurture a manufacturing system that optimizes the coordination of input, process and output. In order to be highly competitive, there is no room for complacency for any company. The ability to fully utilize the resources especially the manning and the machines in the assembly line has always been an important factor to achieve high productivity. Jati Beringin Sdn Bhd (JBSB) was looking for opportunities to expand the business especially on the ABC suspension hook product. However, the company must first identify and improve the current production line before new investment can be determined. This project was initiated through the collaboration between JBSB and the Manufacturing Faculty, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) method was chosen to be used in order to study the production line value added and non-value added activities. To obtain the data, work study and interview methods were used resulted in the development of the current state map (CSM). The CSM was then evaluated and analyzed to identify the various wastes occurring in the process stream Suitable lean techniques such as SMED, 5S and Standard Work were implemented at identified problematic areas such as the bending and assembly area. The result of the improvement enabled the Future State Map (FSM) to be developed.
