Abstract

This paper presents the evaluation of surface roughness and roughness profiles when machining carbon steel under wet and dry conditions with low and high cutting speeds. The workpiece materials and cutting tools selected in this research were AISI 1045 carbon steel and canela carbide inserts. The cutting tools undergone machining tests by CNC turning operation and their performance were evaluated by the surface roughness value and the observation on the surface roughness profile. The machining tests were held at varied cutting speed of 35 m/min to 53 m/min, feed rate of 0.15 mm/rev and 0.50 mm/rev and constant depth of cut of 1mm. From the analysis, it was found that surface roughness increased as the cutting speed increased at the lower feed rate of 0.15 mm/rev whereas at the higher feed rate of 0.5 mm/rev, surface roughness decreased as the cutting speed increased. Varian of surface roughness suspected due to nose radius conditions, whether from tool wear or formation of built-up edge. This study helps to understand the effect of spindle speed and feed rate on surface integrity when machining AISI 1045 carbon steel using carbide cutting tools under wet and cutting condition.
