Abstract

The development of vegetable oil as lubricant for four stroke motorcycle engines increased nowadays due to its advantage over mineral based lubricant. This study is to develop new biodegradable oil by using commercialized palm oil with ZDDP as anti-oxidant, then analyzed and tested for its effectiveness. Palm oil added with 2wt% ZDDP and 5wt% ZDDP was prepared by using direct introduction method at 50°C for 30 minutes. The prepared oil was then tested in various type of testing equipment by following standard method of ASTM which is ASTM D93 for flash point, ASTM D445 for kinematic viscosity, and ASTM D6595 for metal contaminant. Then, the fresh oil was added to the engines and runs for 20 hours which every 4 hours the samples taken for testing. Result found that increment values of kinematic viscosity for palm oil and SAE10w-30 after 20 hours. Next, flash point of palm oil and SAE10w-30 shows decrement values when used for 20 hours. Lastly, concentration of Phosphorus and Zinc also decreased after tested for 20 hours. Found in this experiment which amount of ZDDP affect viscosity of base oil as palm oil added with 2wt% has been decreased its viscosity to lower than virgin palm oil and palm oil added with 5wt% increased viscosity to higher than pure palm oil. Discovered which palm oil has the same behavior such as SAE10w-30 when added 2wt% ZDDP after runs for 20 hours in four stroke motorcycle engines which is the additive reacts as anti-oxidant in the base oil with slow down the oxidation process.
