Abstract

Lubricant applications are widely used in industrial and automotive, where the main function of lubricants is to reduce friction with the layer formation. Studies on palm oil as lubricant substitution were made because the existing mineral oil today have much impact on pollution. Vegetable oils are considered suitable as substitution because the characteristics of vegetable oils are better than mineral oil but there is lacking in vegetable oil that requires additional additives into the vegetable oils. This study was conducted in developing a new bio-lubricant with the addition of additive. Additive ZDDC was introduced to palm oil as to improve palm oil physical properties as lubricant. ZDDC was blended into palm oil using direct introduction method. The mixture was then put inside hot water bath at 50ºc. The ZDDC concentration of 0wt %, 1wt %, 2wt %, 3wt % and 4wt % were blended with palm oil. Samples were then tested using American Society for Testing and Materials and then will be characterized four-ball test and upright laser microscope. Results obtained from the test and characterization shows that ZDDC with 2wt% concentration illustrates the lowest result on kinematic viscosity, COF and WSD compared to other concentrations. As a conclusion, the addition of ZDDC into palm oil with 2wt% concentration is the best weight percentage and has improve the property of palm oil as a new bio-lubricant.
