Abstract

The level of success of product design achieved depends significantly on the initial concept at the early stage of product development process or at the conceptual design stage. Consequently, product designs are generally failed due to the inappropriate decision making during design concepts selection at the conceptual design stage. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is one available method in structuring a systematic approach for a single decision maker or a group decision and has been introduced to solve such problem. The main contribution of the research is the set of criteria for conceptual design selection. To illustrate the application of AHP in determining the optimum design concept for automotive component, a case study of automotive components was conducted and sensitivity analysis was performed to test the stability of the priority ranking. Thus, the research presents the way of selecting design concept by developing prototype or selection framework for automotive components at the conceptual design stage using analytical hierarchy process approach.
