Abstract

Muslims need to obey their obligation to perform Solat (Muslims' prayers)regardless of where they are. For an instance, Muslims traveling abroad in airplanes are still required to perform prayers, even though they may encounter difficulties to do so due to high velocity of the airplane and its orientation. Furthermore, Muslims need to identify their current location in order to know prayer times schedule and Qiblat Direction. To our knowledge, there are no such portable equipments available to determine the real-time prayer times and the current Qiblat Direction. This project presents an innovative system to determine the real-time prayer times and the current digital Qiblat direction using Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)/ Pocket PC with built-in Global Positioning System (GPS). The beneficial of the GPS is utilized in this system in order to obtain the accurate location of the observant even when they are on moving vehicles such as in airplane, ship, train etc. Therefore, the determination of the prayer times and the Qiblat direction is done by the system automatically, without the requirement to select the current location where it is a standard practice for the existing conventional systems. The software of the system has been developed using Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and could be incorporated at any appropriate Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) or smartphones with GPS capabilities. A large proportion of Muslim population 1.75 billions in year 2005, i.e.about 29 percents of the world population with a gradual increase for PDA/Pocket PC and smartphone users; is expected to be the main users for the commercialization. It is highly hoped that this "In-Flight Prayer Times and Qiblat Direction using GPS" could provide a platform for Muslims to perform their daily duty in a proper manner no matter where they are.
