Abstract

In many types of service application, metal are subjected to repetitive or cyclic stress will fail at much lower stress than that which the part can withstand under the application of a single static stress. These failures that occur under repeated or cyclic stressing are called fatigue failures. The example of machine parts in which fatigue failures usually occurred are common moving parts such as shaft, connecting rod, and gear. Some estimates of failures in machine attribute about 80 percent to the direct action of a fatigue. This project will investigate on the fatigue failure of metal that is caused by the constant fluctuating flexural load. The study was conducted on low carbon steel AISISAE 1020. Six specimens with the same geometry were tested in the laboratory by using the INSTRON machine. The specimens were rectangular in shape and have notch at the bottom, in the middle ofthe support span. The specimen thickness, W is 9.5mm and the width and length are 9.5mm and lOOmm respectively. The length of the span is 80mm. The testing was conducted with Three Points Bend method. Different values of load were applied on each specimen starting with 20kN, 18kN, 16kN, 14kN and lastly 12kN. The frequency for every testing was the same which is 10Hz. The result were recorded and plotted in the P-N graph where Pis the maximum load and N is the number of cycles. From the graph, we can obtain the fatigue strength and fatigue life of the material. The higher load produces smaller number of the life cycles. Some factors that cause errors in the experiment had been identified and stated in the discussion. A few suggestions also had been stated to produce a better result for the next study in the future.
