Abstract

High density polyethylene (HDPE) is one of the materials that are often used in manufacturing plastic bags. However, due to its high extensive usage, HOPE plastic bag are always subjected to criticism for producing major pollution to the environmental. In this study, HOPE plastic bags are used as one of the raw material to manufacture hardboard. The purpose of this study is to find new use for recycled HOPE plastic bags and to reduce the pollution to the environment. The design of the hybrid composite is composed of wire mesh, E-Glass and HOPE plastic bag as the matrix material which are then compressed into hardboard by using the hot press machine. There are eleven different types of design for the hardboard in which the layer thickness and layer sequence are chosen as the design variable. By analyzing the effect of layer thickness and layer arrangement in the hybrid composite laminate, the most optimum formulation based on the properties can be determined. The evaluation of the mechanical properties of the hardboard includes the tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and hardness. The mechanical properties tests are based on the ASTM standard testing method. SIN 9 proved to be the most excellent design among others because it exhibits the best and the most consistent result from all of the testing that were done. SIN 9 consists of ten layers of fiber glass with an arrangement of seven fiber glass on the top of the wire mesh and three layers of fiber glass at the bottom. The hardboard product that had been manufactured can be use in the application of plastic transportation pallet.
