Abstract

Ceramic is basically a mixture of clay and other materials such as silica sand and feldspar. Ceramics typically exhibit a high brittleness and this has been a lot of limiting the privileges of this material in terms of mechanical properties. Heating process of ceramic products are intended to maximize the hardness of ceramic to obtain the internal structure of a neatly arranged and concise. Parameters such as sintering temperature and cooling medium is essential to ensure the quality of a ceramic product produced. Pottery manufacturers in Malaysia facing problems related to the cooling rate of the product after the heating process in a kiln. On average, a period of 8 hours is required before the final product of pottery through the packaging process. This study is carried out to determine the cooling rate of a ceramic specimen. Main objective is to analyze difference of heating effect and cooling medium to the cooling rate on white clay and red clay ceramic. Cylindrical specimen were formed using slip casting method and mould that is made from calcine gypsum then dried after specimen taken out from mould. The process continues by burning both type of specimen in furnace at different temperatures of 300 °C, 400 °C and also 500 °C. Cooling process carried out for each specimen using different cooling medium which are natural air cooling, furnace cooling and immersion in water. The results of the experiments show, the specimen is cooling rapidly in water followed by cooling in air and furnace. Ceramic packaging products will be done sooner if the cooling process can be expedited.
