Abstract

This project presents an energy storage technology for a renewable energy power generation, which is developed as a small scale power plant. The proposed system based on main compressed air energy storage (CAES) concept but it is in small scale system (SCAES). The system consists of 4 main components: air compressor and pressure vessel, micro turbine, DC generator and DC/ AC converter circuit. This project is design system where it can use off-peak electricity to switch on the air compressor to produces compressed air. It is stored in pressurized vessels as energy storage medium and installed above ground to avoid the site limitation as the conventional CAES does. When the air is released, the compressed air expands through a micro-turbine blade which connected single shaft with DC generator that used as power generation. The micro-turbine blade run and rotate generator rotor that convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. This system does not have combustion units as the conventional CAES that used gas turbine. Thus, the system does not bum fuel and exhaust pollution. The output voltage will convert from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) voltage after flow in the DC/AC converter circuit. These four components are related with each other to produced output. This report describe the analysis about the system characteristic that have been done include input of air compressed, speed of turbine rotation and output generator are related.
