Abstract

This PSM (Projek Sarjana Muda) entitled “An Experiment Study of Material Property (Hardness) parameter for Surface Grinding”. The project will determined the effect of depth of cut, material and feed of the operation surface grinding machine to the material’s hardness. After that, an experiment will be done to determine the impact of factors affected to their hardness. Hardness is defined as not an intrinsic property of any material, it is rather a characteristic deriving from the composition, the thermal and mechanical history of the material, and the essentially from the microstructure of the specimen involved. The materials that will be used for this research are low carbon steel and medium carbon steel, which will grind with surface grinding. Their characteristic will be compared, which will give the most significant impact of hardness. Both materials will be grind using surface grinding machine that available in the Machine Shop Laboratory in UTEM. The method of the project to be used is Design of Experiment (DOE). There will be 16 samples will be done by using two materials and various feed and depth of cut. A table will be draw to organize the finding and observed the result. The result will be analyzed with MINITAB software, which uses the database in the experiment done before. After that, then only the hardness test with Brinell Hardness Test can be done to determine the conclusion.
