Abstract
Driver drowsiness is a critical factor in road accidents, leading to numerous fatalities and injuries worldwide. This project aims to enhance road safety by developing a real-time, non-intrusive drowsiness detection system using computer vision techniques. Implemented in MATLAB, the system utilizes the Viola-Jones algorithm and Haar Cascade classifiers to detect facial features, particularly focusing on eye closure duration to assess the driver’s drowsiness level. When prolonged eye closure is detected, an audible alarm is triggered to alert the driver, helping prevent potential accidents. The system’s performance was tested under various conditions, including different lighting, demonstrating promising accuracy and reliability despite challenges such as false positives and low-light performance. By providing a practical and efficient method for detecting driver fatigue, this project offers a significant contribution to reducing drowsiness-related accidents and improving transportation safety.
