Abstract

Bemban (Donax Grandis) natural fibers are combined with a thermoplastic starch matrix to produce fiber composites. The aim of this experiment is how the mechanical quality of thermoplastic starch is strengthened with Bemban fibers in a mixture ratio of 1:1, 1:5, 1:10 and Starch. The raw bemban is processed into fiber by leaving it to dry out and rot naturally for several weeks. After this time period, the bemban get separated from the coir and the fibres. In order to obtain "short fibres," the fibres would ground up using a grinding machine until the fibres reach a fine consistency. The fibre is combined with starch, glycerol, and PVA in the following step. After the ingredients have been combined, the mixture pressed into a mould with measures 250 mm x 250 mm × 3 mm. After the mould has been completed, it is placed in a hot press machine that has specific temperature, pressure, and time setting applied to it. After become a composite, the sample si cut into smaller pieces with dimensions of 250 mm x 2.5 mm × 3 mm. The sample divided into two parts. one part used for the tensile test, and the other part is used for the water absorption test. Tensile and water absorption tests is performed to determine the failure of these fibers. This is used to see how the forming process affects the mechanical properties of the composite.
