Abstract

Most of published research works on the development of chip formation and mechanism in machining of hardened steels concerned with the turning process. The chip usually influenced by several factor of cutting parameter. In this study, an experiment is carried out to study influencing cutting parameter on chip thickness by turning operation. This aim of present study used to develop an effect of chip thickness in mild steel AISI 1030 during turning by mixed ceramic (CNGA432T0402) with TiAlN coated cutting tool using universal lathe machine. The independent variables or the primary machining parameters selected for this experiment was the cutting speed and feed rate. Experiments were conducted within specified ranges of the parameters; (a) cutting speed, Vc = 58 m/min, 102 m/min, and 242 m/min, (b) feed rate, f = 0.1 mm/rev, 0.144 mm/rev, and 0.188 mm/rev. AxioVision software was used as image analyzer. The study of chip morphology used to define an effect of influencing cutting parameters to the chip thickness and also surface finish. The chips image and measurement was analyzed in term of chip thickness, shear angle and pitch of chips. Afterwards, the chip ratio and degree of segmentation were measured using chip thickness by equation given. In addition, the microstructure was also analyzed using Image Analyzer after etching with 3% Nital solution. While the surface finish of workpiece was analyzed using Profilometer Surface Roughness Tester Mitutoyo SJ-301. The result shows the effects of cutting parameter to the chip deformation and correlation between chip morphology and surface finish.
