Abstract

The function of gun mounting on vehicles is to ensure that weapons can be hold during the firing in order to get accuracy. The use of gun mounting on military vehicles has long been applied but no research on the needs of a suitable size for Malaysian Army used. The project is focused on the study of actual gun mounting which is already in the inventory of Malaysian Army. Design on gun mounting that exist is bulky and appeared to use excessive material where it’s affects the gun mounting’s weight itself. Accordingly, a product selection has been made and gun mounting on VAMTAC vehicle will be used as a reference. Overview and discussion on the product has been implemented. 3D scanner was used initially as a means to get profile of gun mounting in terms of shape and size. However, these methods fail because the 3D data cannot be transferred and the system can’t identify the accurate dimension. Manual measurement method is then used to determine the size and the data is use to directly drawn the part in CAD software, SolidWorks. The analysis will be carried out using Altair's SolidThinking software and the results obtained will be used to produce a prototype using the Rapid Prototype Machine. Next fabrication of products will be carried out using the manufacturing process.
