Abstract

A slipway cradle is a mechanical structure used to assist the operation of drydocking and launching a boat or ship from the slipway to the water body. The operation of dry-docking is one of the initial steps for the vessels’ maintenance and services to be done on the dock. Since the operation of dry docking is a frequent operation and may takes up to a few times in a month, it is very crucial for the operation of the dry-docking to be done smoothly and any problems or issues that may affect the operation must be eliminated. Important considerations will include the water level reading and the capability of the vessel to be locked to the slipway cradle structure during low water level. The main purpose of this study is to analyse the problems faced by the ship maintenance industry regarding the up-slipping operation for dry-docking in full depth, by focusing on the productivity and effectiveness of the current structure of cradle and slipway with regards to their capability to serve as a mechanism for the operation of up-slipping the vessels’ bodies. The material used is 316L marine grade stainless steel due to the properties that it possesses which includes ideal strength and high corrosion resistance to the marine environment. The methodology used to analyse the water level is by using the R control chart for data classification. In the designing process as well as the structural analysis, SolidWorks software is used to redesign the old and the new structure and to do the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The project is a significant one for solving the problems which had been faced by all the shipbuilding company around the country especially in MSET Shipbuilding Corporation Sdn. Bhd
