Abstract

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a 3D printing technology that uses thermoplastic filament. However, despite of functional prototypes and geometric complexity, the surface quality of parts produced is undesirable due to the staircase effect of the printing process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of applying ultrasonic frequency and vacuum pressure to improve the printed surface quality of FDM test specimen.A transducer was firmly attached onto a printer platform and the 3D printer was housed in a vacuum chamber. The result shows that 14% (16.2μm) of ultrasonic assisted, and 9% (17.3μm) of vacuum system assisted improvement of the test specimen surface finish compared to normal printed test specimen.
