Abstract

Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is a wind turbine that rotate it blade in vertically direction by using drag force or lift force from the wind energy into torque on a rotating shaft, even in low wind speed compare to horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT)(Lee et al., 2016). There are many design of VAWT that has been develop such as Savonius VAWT, Darrius VAWT, H-Bridge VAWT and Gorlov VAWT (Casini, 2015). In recent era, research and development activities in renewable energy sector, especially wind and solar, have increase it attention, due to the worldwide energy crisis and high global emission. Basically, horizontal axis wind turbine unsuitable for household implementation due to their wind speed requirement. Regarding to this problem, Savonius vertical axis wind turbine might be the better option as it able to operate in low wind speed condition compare to horizontal axis wind turbine. The choice for this model is to showcase its efficiency in varying wind conditions as compared to the traditional horizontal axis wind turbine and contribute to its steady growing popularity for the purpose of mass utilization in the near future as a reliable source of power generation(Dhote, 2015). In this project, the design of VAWT was focused based on the Savonius VAWT design. The hardware production will start from creating the wind turbine from scratch, construct a complete system that including storage system and output application. Finally, the finishing product will be tested on specific location that may be suitable for this application and data will be collected. The result will be analysed for it overall performance and conclusion will made at the end of the project. The purpose of this project is testing the overall output power production when tested at three different location.
