Abstract

Fossil fuels now is at a critical level and to produce it takes a long time. Therefore, this study aimed to find new fuels to replace diesel as fuel existing today. However, it is very important to know in advance the properties of the fuel in order to avoid damage to the engine. Thus, some experiments should be conducted to get the properties of the fuel. In this study, rapeseed oil is the main substance of replacing diesel. However, due to the properties of the liquid is not suitable for use in engine, mixed with diesel must be done. There are four oil samples of RS1 (5% rapeseed oil, 95% diesel), RS2 (10% rapeseed oil, 90% diesel), RS3 (15% rapeseed oil, 85% diesel) and RS4 (20% oil seeds rapeseed, 80% diesel) will be tested on a single-cylinder diesel engine. Before tests conducted on the engine, the density and kinematic viscosity of the oil samples were taken through experiments. As a result, seen that characteristics of each sample of oil will increase when the ratio of rapeseed oil increased. Engine power and brake specific fuel consumption of the engine performance is found by using some formula based on data that can be retrieved through tests on the engine. Engine power and brake specific fuel consumption was found to be decreased when the ratio of rapeseed oil increased. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide gas emission is measured when the engine is running for each sample oil. Emissions of carbon monoxide gas that using diesel is the highest while emits lowest for carbon dioxide gas.
