Abstract

Densification has always been a major issue in dealing with ceramics. A good cutting inserts should possess high hardness, wear resistance and able to withstand high temperature. The effects of PEG binder on microstructure, the mechanical properties and wear performance of alumina based ceramics were investigated and a highly densified cutting tool was produced. The powders of alumina, yttria stabilized zirconia and chromia were mixed and uniaxially pressed by using mould into rhombic cutting tool inserts and subsequently sintered at 1400oC for 9 hours. The effects of the cutting tool inserts microstructures on thei.r mechanical properties and wear performance were studied. The microstructural observations show that the A 1203 grain s ize is s ignificantly dependent on the amount of IPEG binder used. The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness tests are directly related! to the results of wear area, where the cutting insert with the minimum wear area also showed the highest hardness and fracture toughness. The res ults show that an addifion of 0.5 wt% of PEG binder produces the most densitied structure of alum ina cutting tool. The strength of pure alum ina cutting tool which re lative hardness is around 55HRC. This kind of cutting tool composition produces a sample consisting of 63.9HRC, which is 16% harder compared to pure alumina. This study gives better understanding about the need of densitication in producing a high performance cutting tool.
