Abstract

The growing environmental concerns resulted in increasing of demand of an environmental friendly lubricant. This is due to the majority of the current lubricants are mineral based lubricants which are non-biodegradable, non-renewable and toxic to the environment. Hence, the development of non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable has been encouraged to overcome the environmental problem that related with the mineral based lubricant. In this study, the main objective is to develop a new bio-lubricant with satisfactory lubricating performance. For the developing a new bio-lubricant, the commercialized cooking palm oil was blended with lubricant additives which is and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) and zinc diamyl dithiocarbamate (ZDDC) by using direct introduction method. There are four different concentrations of each lubricant additives were used in the sample preparation which are 0wt%, 1.0wt%, 2.0wt% and 3wt%. The sample were tested for the additive dilution in accordance with ASTM test method and characterized for tribological properties by using four-ball tester and laser microscope. This study discovered that ZDDP displayed a better performance compared to ZDDC in terms of coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter where it exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter which is 0.068 and 83.55 μm respectively at a concentration of 2 wt%. It can be concluded that the addition of organo zinc compound had improved the coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter of commercialized palm oil as lubricant.
