Abstract
This research primarily focuses on mechanical and physical behavior of Hevea Brasiliensis (rubber wood) sandwich structure on the effect of cell diameter variation of hexagonal core. From previous study, the wood-based material can be considered as popular in composite world which the wood sawdust has been used to fabricate the medium density fiberboard for furniture application or high density fiberboard for flooring.Besides,it has been used as face sheet of sandwich structure for construction application. However, natural rubber wood is has not been produced into hexagonal core.In this research, the manipulated variable used was the cell diameter of the hexagonal rubber wood core which are 7 mm,7.5 mm,8 mm and 9 mm with constant 1 mm of cell wall thickness by using CNC gantry router and consolidated with woven E-glass with epoxy resin to fabricate the sandwich structure. The natural rubber wood and rubber wood block sandwich structure are considered as control samples to evaluate the mechanical properties of hexagonal wood core sandwich structure. The mechanical and physical behavior of prepared samples were investigated according to ASTM standard.Morphology of the sandwich structure was analyzed by optical microscopy to identify the failure mode.Overall, the designed 7.5 mm of cell diameter could achieved higher specific mechanical properties compared to other cell diameters. However, the CD7.5 had 2.928 Nkg/mm of specific tensile strength which was lower than CD8 since the cohesive failure was revealed at CD7.5.Besides,the peeling strength of CD7.5 (91.31 N) was lower than CD9 since error of core fabrication occurred at CD9.Nonetheless,CD7.5 that was consisted of higher specific of compressive strength (10.79 Nkg/ mm),specific shear strength (1.831 Nkg/mm) and specific flexural stiffness (1.668 MNmm2/g) compared with other cell diameters which can be utilized for application.Via comparison to previous study, specific shear strength of CD7.5 is higher than balsa wood sandwich structure approximately at 95.87 % which means that the hexagonal rubber wood has higher resistance to core shear compared to balsa wood core.
