Abstract
To solve the waste disposal issue, the post-consumed or waste plastic materials can be recycled and used to replace the virgin construction materials in construction industries. Nowadays, there are many researchers utilized plastic waste as a substitution to natural sand and crushed stone as well as a reinforcement in fabricating a lightweight and an optimum-strength concrete composite. From previous researches, there are many studies regarding plastic aggregate and plastic fibre based concrete, but there is no research about direct recycling of plastic waste to produce a whole reinforcing structure in fabricating the composite. Thus, this research was carried out to develop a reinforcing structure with different shapes, patterns and dimensions from recycled HDPE motor oil containers to be embedded in concrete structure. The purpose of this study was to develop a concrete structure by incorporating waste HDPE plastic as the reinforcement and cement as the matrix. The reinforcing structure was prepared by washing, dimensioning, cutting and joining of the waste HDPE containers. Then, the rHDPE reinforced concrete was produce by casting technique. The selection of optimum concrete structure is based on the interaction between different rHDPE reinforcing structure designs with the cement matrix. Therefore, in this study, different shapes of rHDPE reinforcing structure were used to investigate the mechanical properties of produced concrete composites. Later, the fracture surface morphology of selected samples was analyzed by optical microscopy (OM) observation. At the end of this study, the most suitable shapes of rHDPE reinforcing structure were developed and proposed to be incorporated in concrete composites. The round tube and round perforated tube were successfully enhanced the mechanical characteristic of the concrete composites, in terms of their split tensile, flexural and compressive behavior. This research is significantly important to be carried out as to provide another alternative for construction industry that utilizing the advantage of materials recycling to promote more environmental friendly and sustainable buildings.
