Abstract

Magnesium and its alloys are widely known metal for numerous applications due to its excellent properties such as low density, high specific strength and able to recycle. Yet, its low corrosion resistance compare to most metals still daunting its usage. Therefore, in this paper, an attempt to enhance the corrosion resistance of MgAZ91D surface using three techniques known as diffusion, plasma-assist physical vapor deposition (PA-PVD) and duplex was reported. For the diffusion, MgAZ91D was exposed to nitrogen gas at a constant rate of 5 scfh at 400°C for 2 hours in a tube furnace. For the PA-PVD, MgAZ91D surface was coated with CrN using RF magnetron sputtering for a thickness of 1 to 2 microns. For the duplex, MgAZ91D surface was treated with a combination of diffusion and PA-PVD technique. Analysis on the morphology and chemical composition was obtained through SEM-EDX. Corrosion analysis was carried out using corrosion rate graph and measurement on the case depth was performed using microhardness tester. Results showed that corrosion rate on the MgAZ91D surface was found to perform best when only diffusion technique was applied. In the case of duplex technique, the ion bombardment during the PA-PVD process is believed had reduced the diffusion layer and thus weaken the corrosion performance of the MgAZ91D surface as compared to diffusion only.
