Abstract

This engineering project is about the implementation of finite element analysis (FEA) for product design improvement. 1 TERAS Sabit – innovate palm oil fruits harvester plunger is the product focused on design improvement because recently this product encountered a defect, where its locating pin attached, had torn apart after a period of usage. Firstly, the 3D model of the current design is developed and proceeded with non-linear FEA because of the dynamic movement of this product. The FEA has proven the defect is related to its product design. The maximum stress located at the weldment of the pins which resulting the pin to detach. Three improved designs with a new locating feature are introduced. The designs are validated with same FEA method for evaluating the structural stability. From comparison between all FEA results obtained Improvement Design 3 indicated the best result with highest factor of safety (FoS) value indirectly means it the most durable design. The outcome of this project is proposed to Teras Tegap AgroTech Sdn.Bhd. (TTASB) as a reference for the company to progress with their product development process for enhancing their product durability.
