Abstract

The purposed of doing this research is to study and analyzed the effect of kenaf fiber reinforced with polyester resins towards impact characteristic. This study was for developed and analyzed with new composition of polyester resins reinforced with kenaf fiber. The sample was start with 80% of polyester resins and with 20% of kenaf fiber. Then the sample was used in different quantity composition of polyester resins and kenaf fiber. The different kenaf fiber and polyester resins quantity was used to get the best composition for the new composite. But before the sample ready, the mold for the sample was prepared. Then the mixture of the polyester resins with kenaf fiber is put into the aluminum mold and compressed. This new composition characteristic will be tested on impact to determine the durability of the sample. This test will use a Pendulum Impact Test Machine. The sample would be hit by the pendulum at the notch opposite end position. The pendulum that fixed at a certain height is released and impact of the sample at the opposite end of the notch to produced a fractured sample. As a result, it shows that too little content of kenaf fiber and too many content of kenaf fiber led to poor interfacial bonding between the fiber and the polyester. The impact properties of composites depend on the interlaminar and interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. Therefore, the best composition of kenaf fiber reinforced with polyester resins is between the range 40% kenaf fiber with 60% polyester resins and 60% kenaf fiber with 40% of polyester resins.
