Abstract

Planning is the main activity for all the business operations. Early stage of planning is important for every process especially in production. Production planning is categorised into three types which are long-term, intermediate term and short-term. The research study is focus in intermediate term which is aggregate planning. Aggregate planning is a balancing capacity tool to determine the quantity and the production time, normally around 3 to 18 months. It is used for balance the demand and the supply. Balancing capacity is not an easy task. It is required various steps to carry out the capacity planning such as calculation of capacity in a huge production process. The production planners are able to make a correct choice in capacity planning with the help of aggregate planning as one of the techniques of aggregate planning is simulation. This research aims to introduce the simulation of the production process in the aggregate planning. Simulation tool Arena software is the technique to carry out the aggregate planning research. The simulation results are displayed statistically with the help of simulation software according the implemented methodology. The simulation results are discussed in the study which is utilisation, bottleneck and work-in-progress (WIP) of production process. Based on the results, it is allows the planner to determine the capacity of production process in more accurate and faster way. The highest utilisation of resource is P16 machine which it has the longest cycle time around 20.71 minutes. The bottleneck of the P16 machine is happened in week 16 which it has totals number 187 units of WIP. As conclusion, the study is carried out successfully with it able to fulfil the objectives of study where simulation is a convenient tool which provides a better visualisation of production process for the planner to determine the capacity planning.
