Abstract

Most industry faces a problem with the staff or specifically technician availability and their utilization with the workload. The case is either the company has excessive technicians or not enough technicians where they have to bear with the unnecessary cost. The cost will unfortunately affect the profit of the company. More than that, not having enough staff consequently will affect the production line where the process must be stop if the machine is breakdown. The purpose of this research is to find the optimum or equivalent number of technician in maintenance department needed with the available machines. The availability of adequate technicians with the machines will helps to provide a high productivity. Critical resources are needed to keep the production line process running smoothly. The important function of maintenance department, in this case, is providing a proper staffing plan and adequate level of maintenance staffs. The problem is many companies do not have systematic or quantitative method to do maintenance staffing or determine the number of technician needed. Thus simulation is use to provide the solution for the problem as in this study the suggested number of optimum technician is either three to four technicians based on the management priority for the cost of manpower. The simulation demonstrates how the engineers can improve the optimization of manpower by generating formula using standard spreadsheet software and collections of data.
