Abstract

In the manufacturing industry, lean manufacturing becomes popular as a beneficial way in the pursuit of better system efficiencies. The main principle of lean manufacturing is to reduce waste in an operation, such as long lead times and reduces production cycle time. In order to visually display where waste occurs in the process, a value stream map (VSM) is drawn. VSMs are often used to assess current manufacturing processes as well as create ideal, current state processes. The purposes of this study are to identify waste using lean manufacturing technique, determine causes to the waste through the value stream mapping and to propose solution by improving the performance skill of the operators. Potential waste activities to be include transportation, excessive motions, inventories, waiting, overproduction and non-utilized skill. In order to reduce this waste, some of manufacturing tools are used. It has been concluded from the constructed current state map of Turbo Fan 3HP- Panasonic value stream that the future state map suggests that a processing time and cycle time reduction could be achieve, mainly through eliminating most of the waste that has been identified. From the analysis, the value added activities amount 0.21% and the non-value added amount 99.79%. This mostly caused by waste of overproduction, non-utilized skill, defect and inventory.
