Abstract

Lean manufacturing focusing on the way to eliminate waste and to improve the efficiency in manufacturing environment. There are seven types of wastes that exist in manufacturing; transportation, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, overprocessing and defect. These wastes can affect the production and productivity of the company or industry if being left alone. This project is specifically concerned on the productivity improvement in production line by implementation of lean principles and was carried out in the manufacturing industry. In order to improve the productivity of the industry, the wastes need to be reduced. There are two major purposes of this project; to reduce bottleneck at production line by using One-Piece-Flow method and to minimize overprocessing at production line by using new Standardized Work. This project only concentrates on the problems in secondary assembly production line that were caused by bottlenecks in production line and overprocessing caused by the operator. The lean tools that were used in this project are One-Piece-Flow and Standardized Work methods. The Standardized Work method helps to minimize overprocessing in operators. When the overprocessing waste was minimized, it causing the processes flow became faster as the cycle time was reduced and increased efficiency of the operator and affected the improvement in productivity of the product. The One-Piece-Flow method helps to reduce bottlenecks in production line. When the layout of the workstations was compatible with the production line, it created a good flow of the processes because the processes at all stations became continuous and the bottlenecks reduction can be achieved. Hence, the implementation of lean principles in the secondary assembly line for product Assy Stand P-Base; Standardized Work and One-Piece-Flow in this project brings profits for manufacturers and improved the production performance in the industry as they helped minimized overprocessing in operators and reduced the bottlenecks in production line, and also increased 40% of the production output for the industry.
