Abstract

The main purpose of this project is to study the effects of mixing ratio of polypropylene/polyethylene (PE/PP) and paraffin wax (PW) on its mechanical properties using internal batch mixer machine. The polymers and paraffin wax were mixed with different ratio by using internal batch mixer at 180°C and 25rpm for 5 minutes; and after that pressed into a mould by using hot press machine at 180°C. Next, the mixed compounds were cut to dumbell-shaped samples according to ASTM D638 using sample cutter machine and tested its mechanical properties using universal testing machine. It is found that the tensile strength was enhanced at 50/50 of PE/PP mixing ratio with 5% paraffin wax compared to pure PP results. Besides that both Young’s modulus and percentage of elongation result’s show the highest at 50/50 of PE/PP with 30% of paraffin wax. From this experiment it shows that PE,PP and PW can be mixed and in a miscible state. This can contribute towards plastic industry where superior properties can be gain but using low cost materials.
