Abstract

New sources of alternative fuels should be developed with properties comparable to petroleum-based fuels. Then alternative sources such as palm biodiesel should be to solve the problems that occur. This project will discuss the background of palm biodiesel as properties, advantages and performance of palm biodiesel for diesel engines and also identifies the problems faced by today's society through the use of diesel. This study, will present the use of biodiesel fuel blend that is mixed with diesel fuel plus additives in different proportions. The properties of this fuel mixture will be reviewed based on calorific value, viscosity and density to determine the advantages or disadvantages of this fuel mixture. Taguchi method was used in this study to optimize the results of a diesel engine performance and emissions. Performance will be measured in terms of engine power, specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency and brake mean effective pressure of testing diesel engines. Engine testing will use : diesel engine KM170F type (A) with 1 cylinder and 4 stroke. This study also includes comparisons of gas emissions from the fuel mix, particularly carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Comparison between the 3 samples of sample A, sample B and sample C indicates that the sample A gives the best engine performance and least exhaust emissions compared to sample B and sample C.
