Abstract

Honeycomb sandwich structure combines high flexural rigidity and bending strength with low weight. Sandwich construction plays an increasing role in industry, and sandwich structural designing is an available method for sandwich structures. However, the absence of the design variable is the principal problem of composite sandwich construction. In this paper, static three-point bending tests were carried out in order to investigate the structural response (collapse modes, energy dissipation, strain rate sensitivity) of one type of paper honeycomb sandwich panels (PHS), consisting of three different thicknesses. Three panels thickness were considered; 9.1 mm, 35.84 mm and 41.92 mm with eight span length. Eight span lengths are 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120mm with compression rate of 2 mm/min. The theoretical collapse used in aluminium foam sandwich (AFS) is adapted and compared with experimental results. It was found that different collapse modes can be obtained for samples with identical nominal dimensions, depending on the support span distance and the own PHS properties. Simplified theoretical collapse models were introduced to explain the observed experimental behavior, showing good agreement between predicted and experimental limit load.
