Abstract

This project is about assessing current layout of manufacturing industry which produces electrical parts. The aims of the project is to identify the constraints of current layout of departments in the factory, evaluate on the current layout using Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) Algorithm and propose an improvement to the current layout. Based on observation, some recommendations were developed to improve the performance of industry. The project methodology consists of few steps namely, defining process flow of product, defining current manufacturing layout and performing the analysing technique using Systematic Layout Planning (SLP). The project collected some information by doing survey, interviewed and measured the activities of part flow, part process, distances of centroid among department and current dimension of layout. Based on the information gathered, it then converted into relationship diagram, searching appropriate space relationship diagram to develop layout alternatives and selecting feasible manufacturing facility layout after making evaluation. Based on the analysis using SLP method, the current layout needs improvement. The SLP pattern requires that two or more alternatives to be developed and evaluated before a plan is approved. Three alternative layouts are generated and assessed to select the best alternative layout to be proposed. Alternative layout 2 gives the most minimum total score layout of closeness relationships among other alternatives and the current layout itself.
