Abstract
The aim of this study was to find the root cause of a failure carbon steel pipe at weldment area cause by preferential corrosion. The carbon steel pipe was supply by JX Nippon Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Malaysia, based in Miri, Sarawak. The severe conditions in the piping system has lead the internal surface of the pipe to the high level corrosion, especially at weldment area. Natural gas was flowing inside the pipe system to the processing operation inside the Helang Intergrated Platform (HIP) system, until it ready to be exported to MLNG in Bintulu, Sarawak. In order to find the root cause of the failure, several testing and experiments have been planned to investigate the metallographic of the failure part. Sample testing method such as Visual Inspection, Optical Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope and Vickers Hardness Testing was succesfully done through the pipe sample. In order to compare useful properties, characterization of the microstructure was conducted on the sample taken from three main regions of the sample which are the parent metal or based metal, the heat affected zone (HAZ) and also the weld metal. The result of the testing has proved that preferential corrosion happened at the pipe, eventhough cathodic protection was used in the pipe system. The result of the experiment has been analyzed in order to support the findings of the failure part. Further research on electrochemistry reaction in corrosion study are fully recommended in order to relate the concept with failure mechanism in every applications and condition.
