Abstract

Research works on long-wavelength (L W) vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have been carried out broadly due to its significant role in long-haul optical communication links. ln this research, simulation is carried out based on the 1550-nm lnGaAsP oxide-confined VCSEL structure to compare different parameters that are being examined. These include the oxide aperture radius (R at), driving current, distance between laser facet and fiber pigtail (Dexr), optical feedback (OF), misalignment and data bit rate. Simulation results have shown that the performance ofVCSEL can be improved by usign the optimum parameter. Moreover, through simulation, it is discovered that with an oxide aperture radius of 2.5 JLm, low threshold current, low tum-on delay, high relaxation oscillation frequency (ROF) with modulation bandwidth in excess of 25 GHz and a better opening eye diagram at I 0 Gbps are achieved. It is proven that the laser device is able to obtain the lowest threshold cutTent when Dexr is 90j . un. In addition, a better power efficiency is obtained with a shorter De.tt· However, this, in return, will cause a greater tum-on delay to the device. Higher bandwidth can be realized with an optimized optical feedback or by increasing Dw. Finally, RIN is shown to be relatively unaffected by a weak optical feedback.
