Abstract

This research purposed is to study and analyze the effect of layer arrangement of the skins towards the performances of the overall sandwich composites. This study also aims to optimize the performance of the sandwich composite product while maintain the thickness of the panel as thin as possible without affect the performance of the sandwich composites. The raw material for core of sandwich composites used in this study is rigid polyurethane foam. Fiber reinforced plastics are laminated to the rigid polyurethane foam surface. The fiber used is woven roving E-glass fiber where the matrix used is based on unsaturated polyester resin. Skins and sandwich composites fabrications were prepared by vacuum bagging process. Six different layers laminated skins, which are one ply to five plies glass fiber skins of symmetry sandwich panels with rigid polyurethane foam core and polyurethane foam coated with polyester resin were fabricated in this study. After that, the panels have undergone two types of testing which is physical testing and mechanical testing. All the testing conducted were referred according to the standard test methods provided by ASTM standard. From the tests, the best number of laminates skins for rigid polyurethane foam a core sandwich composite that was selected and will compare to the actual product. Based on the analyses of physical and mechanical testing, it was found out the sample S/N 3 which is polyurethane foam core with three layers of fiberglass skin has given optimum and reliable properties. Besides that, S/N 3 has possessed properties much better than actual product. Meanwhile S/N 3 is suitable used as an alternative product for the actual product application.
