Abstract
To mitigate the world's energy problems and global wanning, researchers are focusing on renewable energy, regenerate energy, efficient energy usage and fmding alternative energy. For an automobile, engines also produce heat which is now released as waste heat which have a potential to generate energy. Power distribution of an automotive is showing that only about 20% of the power from engine combustion is convert to wheel or driving power and more than 60% of the power will be wasted[1]. To use energy efficiently, this waste heat have to be reused as a power supply to other system in the automobile. The research organic Rankine cycle (ORC) to convert heat into useful work have been done for many years. Research study to described the effects of thermal properties of an organic working fluid on the turbine power had also been reported [2][3]. Commercial ORC system to converts waste heat into electricity were also introduced. Even the research to use waste heat from automobile engine had been done, but until now there is no application to actual vehicle due to efficiency problems. This research proposed to design and make a fundamental study for the Rankine cycle energy recovery system inside an actual automobile. Feasibility study will conduct, to investigate the capability of the system and to help developing a system that can be used in an actual automobile. A compact ORC system to be used in the engine room will be design and calculation of the energy that can possibly be achieved will be study before the real system can be implemented. With the design and study data, an efficient waste heat recovery system for the passenger car's engine will be develop in the future.
