Abstract

The application of design for sustainability faces various challenges in manufacturing. Design for sustainability has been showed the extreme interest practice in building and home appliances because of its advantages in reducing the size and initial cost of power system, lower energy cost, reduce maintenance cost and increase life cycle. Most of researchers have been focused on the radical polymer in developing the organic battery. There is a gap of research field to design the compartment for organic battery. The design of compartment for organic battery needs knowledge the sustainability of the radical polymer, heat transfer occurs during the process of storing the energy system, and material selection that suitable for radical polymer. The main objective of this research project is to design the organic battery compartment for residential purpose using design for sustainability and rapid prototyping. The design parameters of the organic battery compartment that influence the performance of organic battery were investigated, such as static pressure, dynamic pressure, turbulent energy, mass flow rate, velocity of air in the organic battery compartment, temperature of air, and the temperature of the device itself. The alternative designs were generated using free hand sketching. The material selections for organic battery compartment were determined using CES EduPack software. It is concluded that Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) was the suitable material to fulfill the design for sustainability for the organic battery compartment. The design of 2D and 3D model for the alternative designs were generated using Solidworks. The best design for the organic battery compartment was selected using the concept screening and concept scoring methodology. Based on the concept selection, the design concept 1 was selected for further development. As a result, the design of organic battery compartment for residential purpose was developed using Rapid Prototyping.
