Abstract
This project studies the effects of a variety of parameters that influence the process in injection molding applications. The objective of this experiment is ti carry out the investigation the optimal parameters of injection machine to reduce warpage defect. Besides, it aims to find the most significant parameters of injection time, packing time, melt temperature and mold temperature. It aims to find the appropriate parameters for reducing the problem of warpage on the surface of plastic products of “dumbbell” have two cavities right and left side, a specimen used in the tensile test. The material used to produce this product is of Polypropylene (PP). The experiment has been done in the Polymer Lab, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. The machines used to produce this product is Injection Moulding Machine, Arbug 420C (800-250). Type a concept of Design of Experiment (DOE) has been applied and the Taguchi method has been used to determine the suitable parameters in the search results to the injection parameters. To measure the physical properties of the dumbbell products, optical comparator harizontal type was used to test for defects in the product. At the end of this project, the optimum parameter that can minimize the warpage defect on the right side was injection time at 1.0 seconds, packing time at 4.0 seconds, melt temperature at 255˚c and mold temperature at 41˚c. After a verification tests, the percentage of warpage is 5.41%. and while the optimum parameter on the left side that can minimize the warpage defect was injection time at 1.0 seconds, packing time at 5.0 seconds, melt temperature at 270˚c and mold temperature at 21˚c. After a verification tests, the percentage of warpage is 10.34%. Thus, this result shows that the right and left sample have difference warpage due to the cooling channel difference location.
