Abstract

The study of aluminum honeycomb as energy absorption (EA) structure will give a wide range in term of security perspective. The application of EA is not only limited to automobile industry but also widely used in transport, aerospace, marine and nuclear reactor industries. The study of EA in Aluminum Honeycomb Structure is very new area, especially in Finite Element Analysis. Aluminum honeycomb is cellular material that can serve well as energy absorption devices due to their high strength to mass ratio. As the structure of aluminum honeycomb is nonhomogenous and anisotropy material, thus the energy absorption is differ at every angle of impact. Impact has a certain velocity, which give a mode of deformation. However, the deforming modes behave quite similar in either slow or fast loading. Therefore, the study of quasi-static loading is a must and appropriate to obtain the mode during impact as well as dynamic test. However, the complete equipment with regard the impact test is very expensive. Because \ of that, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, ABAQUS is used to perform and solve this problem. The quasi-static FEA results can also compare and certify the experimental data. This will give the dynamic FEA results without performing the experiment. The Microcal Origin 5 software is also used to get the energy absorbed from the area under graph against displacement, taking from the origin point to locking strain line.
