Abstract

Smart Charger with Auto-Power Shut Off is a multi-function charger. This charger is a solution for Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) battery. The main problem of this type of battery is the battery needs the very tidy care. This type of battery need to discharge first before is going to the charging process and the battery can not be exposed to overcharging situation. This will cause the battery no life-longer. So this smart charger is mostly applicable for the battery solution. The charger is equipped with the discharge circuit and auto-off circuit that will be controlled by PIC rnicrocontroller. Once the battery is plugged in, the circuit will discharge the battery first until the battery reach the minimum value of power and then the battery will be charged until it is full. When the battery is full, PIC will switch on the auto-off circuit so that the charging power will be shut-off. Besides of these discharge and auto-off circuit, this smart charger is also completed with an LCD display that shows every step of charger process. For example, this LCD will display 'Charge' when the battery in charging and 'Ready' when the battery in full of charging. When the battery is fully charged and the charger still working, LCD will display 'TimeO' that is means the charger time out. All function and LCD display program have been programmed inside the PIC microcontroller. So, this project is successfully done with all the function and it has the ability to solve the problems regarding to charger.
